The United Nations - Division of Ocean and Law of the Sea supports developing nations in implementing sustainable ocean governance to grow their blue economies. Through compelling stories, such as that of Peni, a fisherman from Nabaka Village in Fiji, who shares the story of generations of his people taking local initiatives to protect the marine environment, we showcase the real-world impact of these efforts.

As part of the DOALOS/Norad Programmes of Assistance, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, I led a two-week production in Fiji to capture stories not just of policy and training, but of human connection and hope. One of those stories followed Peni Suveinaka, a local government participant whose village, moved by what he learned, created its own marine protected area — a living testament to the power of knowledge and community. With 109 nations participating and four improving their laws, the program’s reach extends far beyond the classroom — empowering developing countries through regional consultations, workshops, ocean governance studies, and technical assistance to protect their oceans and grow their blue economies with resilience and pride.

For the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty (BBNJ) campaign, I directed films designed to translate urgency into emotion — blending dramatic pacing, cinematic imagery, and music to call governments to act. The message resonated: what began with 29 ratifications grew to 60, marking a global milestone in ocean protection. The campaign demonstrated that creative storytelling can accelerate real-world change, turning complex policy into something deeply human and remembered.
